Client Ditches Her Dining Room Carpet

The Challenge: Client wants to ditch her dining room carpet and replaces it with hardwood.

As part of her retirement gift from her husband, Kim hired us to sand and refinish her hardwood floors on the first floor. As part of the project we were fixing major sun fade and finish failure. We also sanded and blended different red oak floors. The back area was one color, and the front was another. This owners had lived with it as is for 13 years, and now it was time.

Let me note , our client had another quote years ago and was unimpressed. She learned about us from a neighbor who was thrilled with our work.

Being a skeptical consumer our client doesn’t just let anyone give her a bid. She’s about seen it all with dealing with the public. You see she retired as a cop in Princeton, and spent her career dealing with the rif raf, and hardened from it. I bet she has seen it all! So when she was referred to us by a very happy client who I think works for the FBI.

A sensitive, intuitive person, she read us like a book. We passed her “interrogation,” and she gave us a shot! And actually, when said and done, she loves her floors, but in the process we had become friends. Throughout the project it was fun to hang out, there were a lot of laughs and stories back and forth. Not just us, Kim thoroughly enjoyed our tech too! (How often can you say that happens with a contractor experience?)

Her intuition served her right and we proved it!

Our client was stoked all her concerns were to be handled. Everything she was upset about was going to be fixed. This was a dream come true! And we couldn’t wait to get started. You see our wood technician is not only a master craftsman, he also was raised in a family with a small family business. He gets customer service. He works to please, is respectful in their homes, and efficient with his time. But the real joy and satisfaction for him is “wowing the customer.”  a customer experience that is over the top.

Honestly, time and again we are complimented about our tech, and told we are lucky to have him based on the craftsmanship and the customer experience!

First up was the tear out and installation.

Nothing made our client feel better than cuttin’ her rug, and erasing the damaged finish. After acclimating the new wood material it was an easy install getting in laid down.  The first sanding was done, and we moved on to color selection.

red oak stained to gray beachy driftwood and sand tones
Her lst choice was a medium gray tone that had a beachy-driftwood-sand tones for her newly sanded red oak hardwood

Her preference, dreamy driftwood tones. So we did a sample and she made her choice. Not quite sand between her toes, drink in hand but a good reminder of it.

Next was all the sanding and preparation, then staining and applying finish across the entire first floor.

Might sound like it went quick, which it did, but there was a ton of sanding that got done. Then we had some color conundrums which we dealt with,  and then plowed forward. When all was said and done Kim now had flat, smooth hardwood floors that flowed throughout the first floor. The entry, no longer sun damaged is stunning. And each of the rooms is inviting with that relaxed beach vibe. Only thing left to do is the stair and railing project (a big one at that), but it will complete the project entirely!
