How A Skilled Buyer Handles Color Selection & Hiring a Wood Floor Refinisher

Shamong homeowner uses commercial buying skills to hire us to refinish her hardwood floors.

Our prospective customer has extensive experience in hiring contractors. She oversees and hires contractors for a hospital system, Capital Health.  So recently she used these skills to “GC” her own kitchen-first floor makeover.

Vetting Us Out

Discovering us on FB, she went to our comprehensive website, reviewed our case studies on hardwood, then called us.

On our “case study” page she reviewed our projects with pictures and bios about the jobs, organized by job type: i.e., projects dealing with pet damage, sun fade, scratches, color / style change, board weaving to compensate for moved walls, etc.

Her project was well within our expertise, mainly being an updating with a color change. Only having minor sun fade and old- orangy’ red oak floors, her main goal was to freshen the look with muted gray tones and brown notes. A sweet spot of color in grays, she didn’t want anything too gray or brown.

The Project List

  • update the kitchen
  • refinish the hardwood floors
  • get the interior painted
  • have a new railing and stair system installed

We were invited to give her a proposal for hardwood floor refinishing. This included a color change, and sanding and refinishing the main living level. It also included sanding and staining to match the stair treads and upstairs hall.

And while discussing the scope of our project we discovered our neighbor, who is a master carpenter with a wood mill business, was hired to do the railing system upgrade. Highly specialized, redesigning and installing new railing systems is not our forte,’ so working would be a pleasure if given the opportunity.

Contractor to Contractor’ our meet and greet sealed the deal after some intense grilling!

Discovering her skillset and professional prowess, it became a pleasure to discuss her project. Contractor to contractor we got into the “meat” of the project. We understood her requests and goals.

And with her questions you could tell she was grilling us. So as she was, she became highly impressed with our presentation and quote. By the end of our inspection including, giving her an on the spot proposal , we shook hands. Our project would begin when the cabinet painting was done.

Her Challenge —Stain Color Selection and Making sure she ‘nailed it.’

Once in a while a customer struggles over stain color selection. And while I wouldn’t characterize her struggling, I do believe she took her time. She honed in on 3-4 samples. Applying them to the floor, she could mull them over. How do they look by day? And how do they look at night.

Besides the color behavior, she was also factoring in how the color would coordinate with the newly painted cabinets and wall color. So after other colors were sampled on boards she had all the ones “in the running,” to work with. A base color, with notes of other tones to accent the other updating and her decor.

Back and forth with her favored ones, she admitted to needing to take her time.

Favoring one, they swaying to another, you could see she was undecided. Then while we were discussing the colors her husband played a trick on her. After her latest tentative choice he admitted he hated it—getting her hair up. Playing devil’s advocate saying “Oops honey—April Fools!” Digging her feet in she arrived at her choice.

Not so fast, the very next morning we get a call, she’s going with her original decision.

Something to be said for diving in deep while selecting stain color. A final decision was made. We were happy to report done was done! The color was chosen and she never looked back or changed her mind again. “Phew!”

So the very next day we scurried over. (We didn’t want her to digress or angst any more!) Getting the paper work signed and a deposit, we had our marching orders.
