Tips for minimizing the effects of indoor allergens

Seasonal allergies are a terrible problem for a lot of people. With all the flowers, plants and trees blooming, allergens such as pollen, ragweed, and even mold spores blow through the air triggering sneezing, coughing, and watery eyes. Although not much can be done to combat outside allergens, there are steps you can take to minimize allergens inside your home.

The single best thing you can do? Invest in a HEPA vacuum cleaner and use it frequently.

Here’s why:

HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) vacuum cleaners filter out 99.8% of all allergens from the surface being vacuumed and trap them so that they are not released back into the air you breathe. This not only cleans your carpets, rugs and upholstery from contaminants, it also acts as an air filter of sorts to eliminate allergy triggers. This type of vacuum cleaner can be found at any retail store that sells cleaning equipment, and is becoming more and more popular among homeowners.

Here are some other tips to minimize allergy suffering…

  • Shower Power: Pollen sticks to everything. Shower, wash hair, and change clothing if you’ve been outdoors during heavy pollen times.
  • This holds true for pets, too. Bathe them as often as they’ll let you.
  • Keep windows closed.
  • Change filters on HVAC often… once a month. Choose an air filter that has a small-particle or HEPA filter. Try adjusting your air filter so that it directs clean air toward your head when you sleep.
