27 Years of heavy use. One VCT floor is still going strong.

Sometimes an old-school floor proves exactly why it’s still around.

When this Bayville, NJ gymnastics facility contacted Sparkle Surface Care, the project came together quickly. Within just a few days, our team was on site restoring the large VCT lobby and waiting area where parents and families have gathered for years.

The floor had certainly earned some attention.

Years of heavy commercial use had left the VCT severely scratched, dull, and virtually devoid of protective floor finish. It was white, heavily scuffed, and loaded with scratches—some substantial enough to be cause for real concern. But beneath all that wear was a floor that had continued doing exactly what its owner expected it to do:

Perform.

And after 27 years in the gymnastics business, she has some very definite opinions about that.

Old-School VCT — And Proud of It!

Our client is adamant that VCT is the right flooring for her facility. She doesn’t see it as an outdated material that should be torn out simply because newer flooring choices have become more fashionable.

Quite the opposite:  After decades of firsthand experience, she values VCT for its durability, maintainability, and long service life. She’s skeptical of some of today’s LVP and LVT flooring options, which she views as shorter-lived, more disposable floors—products that may eventually be removed and replaced rather than continually maintained and renewed.

Her instincts aren’t without merit. In our own floor-care work, we’ve encountered clients frustrated with some textured LVP and LVT floors because the surface texture can trap fine debris in its contours. This makes routine vacuuming and cleaning more difficult than they expected. Some tell us plainly that they regret the flooring choice—not because every LVP or LVT floor performs poorly, but because the everyday maintenance hasn’t lived up to their expectations.

And remember that fresh vending-machine scratch?

After the VCT was professionally stripped and refinished, that once-glaring scratch virtually disappeared into the restored floor. With many LVP and LVT products, a significant scratch through the finished surface can’t simply be stripped away and covered with a new protective wear layer. Depending on the severity of the damage and the flooring system, the affected plank or tile may need to be replaced. Or, the damage remains as a permanent and very visible reminder.

That’s an important distinction. Newer flooring isn’t automatically better flooring for every environment. Sometimes a surface that can be maintained, restored, and put back into service for years has an advantage that isn’t apparent on the showroom floor.

And in this facility, her old-school VCT has the history to prove its case.

Her VCT has given her a very different experience.

It has endured years of gymnastics-facility traffic, parents gathering in the waiting area, equipment, daily use, and plenty of abuse. It has accumulated scratches and battle scars along the way, but the flooring itself has continued to serve the building.

And now, rather than tearing it out, we could revive it.

For this longtime business owner, that’s pretty compelling validation of a flooring decision made many years ago. The durability of her VCT, watching a vending machine carve a fresh scratch across it was understandably painful.

But that scratch would soon become an unexpected part of this floor’s restoration story.

Today, she remains very much at the helm of the gymnastics business she has operated for nearly three decades, while gradually beginning to pass more of the reins to her daughter.

There’s something rather fitting about that.

• A successful business doesn’t become obsolete simply because another generation is preparing to carry it forward.
• And a hardworking commercial floor doesn’t necessarily become obsolete simply because newer flooring products have entered the marketplace.

Sometimes longevity itself is the proof.

Her VCT has taken the traffic, the scratches, the equipment, the parents, the kids, and the everyday punishment of a busy gymnastics facility—and it remains in service.

Now professionally restored and protected once again, it’s ready to keep doing its job.

Revived, not replaced.

The takeaway: This Bayville gymnastics facility is a particularly fitting example of that philosophy.

A longtime business. A well-used commercial floor. Plenty of scratches and battle scars (and maybe as many as those well-earned training bruises too…)  But for the floor, instead of heading for a dumpster, the VCT was professionally revived and put right back to work.
