The challenge.
We were referred to this project by a trusted restoration partner. The issue and work arose when he became involved in assisting a longtime Roebling homeowner with significant water damage. Clearly, if this had not happened, she would have continued as is. But living alone as a woman, she, along with many women, often feel vulnerable. So when the water damage ensued, there was no choice. It’s common. For her, it forced her hand.
To begin with, the home, a classic family property, dates back to the 1930s. And it naturally accumulated the wear and tear that comes with time and life’s changing seasons.
Fighting some mobility issues, the homeowner, who had been raised in the house, greeted us from her chair in the kitchen. Although uneasy about having unfamiliar people come inside, she placed her faith in the water damage team that recommended us. She spoke with calmness, some reservation, but quiet strength. It was evident that the home — like many lived-in spaces with long histories — reflected the passage of time. Now downtrodden, it depicts the many demands life can place on a person and their surroundings.
To begin with, most everything in the home needed attention. Initially, upon our walk-through we saw much that needed a complete tear-out. But the hardwood floors they were screaming to come alive in the main living area. Having good bones, these were totally fixable. But other surfaces are not.
Moreover, surgical incisions opened up the floors, leaving an ugly blemish in the main area that was easy to see. For whatever reason, replacement boards were slapped back in. They stuck out like a sore thumb. Next, we saw that there were holes in various places. It was evidence of abandoned pipes or wires. And, they added to the distressed appearance. Looking beyond the living room, the kitchen overall was tired, too. It was also awaiting some love. All in all, the water damage was perhaps a blessing in disguise. It had forced some repairs and uplifting to make this a happier place for this kind, gentle lady.
Our plan of attack.
Our primary focus was to restore the vintage pine floors in the living room. It deserved better, for sure. The history and beauty lie within. With help, it can again become a striking feature in the home.
Secondly, we also revived a bedroom upstairs. So once the structural and electrical repairs were completed, and the dumpster removed, we stepped in with a plan that included:
The homeowner requested the floors remain dark to match the existing trim and casings. Her vision was to keep the aesthetic that was rooted in the home’s original character. We honored that completely, finishing the floor in a warm, rich tone that brought out the wood’s natural beauty and respected its vintage charm.
The work.
The work ensued. To start, we began with the repairs, executing them properly and with vintage material. Next, removing a slap happy repair, and replacing boards, our technician gave it the time and attention to do it right. Then a careful sanding schedule was followed precisely. The outcome was a flat and smooth surface. Being pine, it was next conditioned and ready for stain. Following that, it was sealed and finished. A clear success, this floor came a long way back to life!
Results speak for themselves. Step by step, the transformation took place. Now, with hope turning into smiles and visible satisfaction, our client began to open up. In summary, our careful handling, compassion, honesty, and integrity showed through to her. Ultimately, it was clear she felt a sense of trust in us.
And in conclusion, we saw joy and relief as part of her home came back to life. She genuinely thanked us and the other contractors. And, she especially raved about our technician’s craftsmanship, honesty, and respectful approach.
What was a mishap had spawned new life. For this home, it is a continuing journey. Now, she is focusing on other projects and plans to have us back for more transformations in the fall. Step by step, this is a new beginning for her. For us, we’d like to think we made a meaningful dent — creating a refreshed space that brings more comfort, more pride, and perhaps even a bit of momentum toward restoring joy and ease in her home.
