To begin with, this project was very much a family-led effort, guided by deep experience in high-end residential construction. Mark, the homeowner and grandfather, brings decades of success in premium residential rehabs and new builds across his long career. Much of it has taken place in, on and around Long Beach Island. Through his long-standing association with Lynmar Builders, he has cultivated a trusted network of construction professional. Subsequently, many of them were brought on to this project.
As the work was organized, certain specialty needs fell outside the reach of that core team. In those instances, Mark’s daughter Tina stepped in. She sourced local expertise capable of delivering at the same standard. That search led her to our team, after finding us recommended on a FB group in Mt Laurel her best friend is an “admin” on. With impressive reviews she called us. Fort this project, she brought us in specifically for stone restoration and finishing..
We value opportunities like this. And it is an honor when experienced builders and professionals extend us that invitation. Always being a win-win, experienced specialized trades brought in to assist will better assure a successful outcome. And fir us, it’s in these collaborative environments that we shine!
For them, our service was ideal. Mutally we understood that stone restoration adds lasting value—supporting function today while preserving flexibility for what comes next. So with a complete understanding we stood at the ready until it was the right time to do our work.
At the onset the goal was to get the existing floor refreshed and ready for duty. Ultimately this will be home to the owner’s grand daughter and her fiancé. Her fiancé, a Canadian born chef would require an added level of performance from the kitchen. To meet his needs functionality mattered just as much as aesthetics. Furthermore, as explained at the on-set, this kitchen is a work in progress. It needed upgrades fashioned now. But they needed to be done so in a way that they would be compatible with a future potential full-scale remodel.
Therefore, the slate floor needed to perform on day one. By restoring rather than replacing, we delivered a solution that honored the original materials. We protected the investment, and fit it seamlessly into a phased renovation strategy.
Although the scope of the slate restoration was familiar, the execution required patience and control. The existing installation presented inconsistencies. In example, our machine contact was spotty due to the uneveness. We had to adjust and lean into the machines to maintain contact for uniform coverage. This was crucial for “even” results. Variations in plane and setting meant the work progressed slowly. Close scruitiny was essential to how the equipment interacted with the stone.
The darker slate added another layer of challenge. As the surface was opened up, the slurry released from the stone was heavier and more aggressive. Therefore it required enhanced containment. As a result extra protection measures were added to prevent migration into surrounding areas. In addition to isolating and containing the work zone, we expanded our detailing beyond the immediate work area. This was to assure that neighboring surfaces remained unaffected.
Through controlled diamond grinding, thorough cleaning, and color sealing, the floor was brought back into balance. We improved the appearance, enhanced the traction and usability of the kitchen floor. The result— a restored slate surface that performs for everyday cooking and entertaining today. But duly, it also remains compatible and adaptable with future kitchen renovation objectives.
Our tasked goals of this renovation phase were fully achieved. Evidence of prior construction activity was removed. Sheetrock dust, spackle residue, and paint splatter afixed to the slate were eliminated ( a particular pet peeve). As a result, the slate floor was returned to a neutral, workable state.
Now the stone was clean and receptive to finishing. So the final touch was adding a color-enhancing sealer. This step served two purposes. It sealed the slate for durability. And it restored the color depth and clarity to a rich vibrancy.
Finally, the transformation became clear. What had once read as a tired and compromised surface now functions as a deliberate architectural element. The restored slate provides a strong foundation—both visually and practically. And it was ready for future layers to be added.
Today, the floor supports everyday use. Tomorrow, it will integrate seamlessly into a fully realized, chef-driven kitchen design.
As work continues on this home, the restored slate will remain a functional and visual anchor, ready to evolve with the next phase of construction. The approach taken here reflects how we regularly collaborate with experienced contractors and designers across the Jersey Shore—supporting phased renovations while preserving original materials.
That same approach has earned the trust of a multi-generational coastal family with deep roots in the region and a long-standing reputation for excellence. Their commitment to craftsmanship, precision, and performance closely aligns with our own approach to specialty restoration. Here’s what Cathy H., of Cape May, Philadelphia & Palm Beach Gardens Fla has to say about working with us:
“Let me be clear, I don’t trust just anyone in our homes- but the Sparkle Team has earned that trust completely. For over 20 years it’s one call, and every surface in and around my homes are expertly cared for. I never have to worry or micromanag, and that peace of mind is priceless.”
These relationships are built over time—through consistency, discretion, and an understanding of how specialized trades integrate into complex residential projects. For builders and designers working throughout Long Beach Island and all shore communities, we welcome collaboration. When craftsmanship, planning, and respect for original materials matter we are ready to assist!
These are the projects we are built for—and the partnerships we value most.
