Brilliant!
Now a note about this bathroom, it is an interior bath with no window for ventilation. So this is a superb system to assist in the drying when there is no window, or fan that can exhaust the moisture out of the space.
Actually, we are planning a new bathroom and are incorporating that into our plans!
A luxury plumber redid his own master ensuite bathroom to advertise his services, and invites friends and folks in to see the possibilities. One major feature is a beautiful walk-in shower that has a deep waterproof shower pan, an ample-sized bench, and a full-on drying system. Located in a closet on the back side of the walk-in is a powerful fan that, with the flick of a switch, emits airflow across three points. The air circulates at the top of the shower. The second point, where the air flows out, is right at the crook of the bench seat, and a third area is at the base, near the shower pan itself. See Rich’s Plumbing- From Simple to Luxury Plumbing
This couple’s five-foot shower, with tile from floor to ceiling, is completely dry within just a few minutes. Talk about drying on steroids!
Entrapped moisture and poor air flow matter.
Sometimes the design of the shower and trapped moisture is a major problem. That’s why it’s best to have a window in the bathroom or an exhaust fan that ducts to the outside. Other fans that just circulate, but don’t do as well.
Some showers trap moisture so badly that people are forced to keep the shower door open. And even with that, we’ve seen real problems trapping moisture that the grout, edges, corners, and such become a petri dish of “flora and fauna.”
At the worst, some bathrooms are very difficult to keep clean and germ-free. We have even seen some showers and tub areas to be a magnet for mold, biofilm, and crud. (We’ve even had to suggest dehumidifiers in some cases, and that’s pretty radical.)
Honestly, when it gets to that point, you may have to bring in a better exhaust fan or consult a remodeler for options that can help solve the problem!
Why prevention matters.
The best time to address shower problems is before they become extensive. Small areas of discoloration, minor mold growth, or recurring odors may indicate conditions that could worsen over time if left untreated. Routine professional cleaning removes buildup while helping homeowners identify areas that may benefit from repair, restoration, or protection.
The role of grout protection.
Might sound like a broken record here, but it’s true. Grout is naturally porous and can absorb moisture and contaminants. Color sealing helps reduce absorption, improve cleanability, and maintain a cleaner appearance for longer periods.
For homeowners who want a shower that is not only visually appealing but also easier to maintain, grout protection is often one of the smartest investments they can make.
Professional grout color sealing.
It is a nominal longer-term investment that pays off greatly! The keyword is professional. We come across DIY brands all the time that are inferior. Eventually, they flake off. We can’t tell you how many times we are asked to steam clean grouted surfaces, and the appearance does not improve.
Despite using a stiff grout brush to agitate the grout joints and steam cleaning at 1500 psi pressure, with near-boiling hot water and strong cleaning agents, we deliver less than satisfactory results. Now, mind you, the tile and grouted surface is sanitized, but the appearance is not ideal. Instead, you see the grout with some of the original color and some of the remaining paint.
A professional application is much more permanent. And in the vertical wet areas, especially under the shower knobs, a clear coat application may help. To explain further, the lower areas in general, and especially under the shower head, are where soap scum tends to build up. So the extra clear coat from the waste down is extra insurance to fend off build-up in those areas.
Take a look at your caulked areas, too.
The caulking should all be fresh looking, pliable and clean. Once you see hardened, shrunken or moldy or other buildup its time to remove
Bottom line is professional color sealing pays off greatly, making the grout easier to clean, and slows the buildup of soap scum and germs for a healthier bath and shower environment!
Most homeowners judge their shower by appearance.
If the tile looks clean and the glass sparkles, the shower must be clean, right?
Not necessarily. And our infectious disease nurse understood that. While appearance is important, some of the most common shower contaminants develop in places that aren’t immediately visible.
Moisture can become trapped within grout lines, beneath aging caulk, and behind layers of soap scum. Over time, these conditions can support mold growth, bacterial buildup, unpleasant odors, and staining.
Hidden trouble spots.
Professional inspections often reveal issues in areas homeowners rarely notice:
Drying is key.
Using a squeegee is a good idea, as it accelerates drying in the shower and reduces spotting on the glass. An exhaust fan also helps speed up the drying. Fast-drying surfaces mean less chance of mold and other germs from developing.
Designing a new bath?
Incorporate a high-speed fan in the shower like a luxury plumber did in his own house. These pictures show the vents, returns and controls the plumber did in his own bath (Read more below.)
